FAQ

Q. Is Nclear safe? Does it cause any undesirable side effects when used in lakes, rivers, or streams?
A. Nclear was engineered from its inception to only use materials known to be safe for use in water bodies like lakes, rivers, and estuaries. All materials used to make Nclear are found naturally in abundance in healthy water bodies. Competing medias to Nclear, such as alum or iron-based (ferric) medias, have some risk associated with toxins over time and also create an undesirable, mucky floc on the sediment floor of the lake. The mucky floc is not permanent and breaks apart in a few years, releasing the phosphorus back into the water column. Nclear has no undesirable side effects or visual appearance issues, and the phosphate adsorption is permanent.

Q. How was Nclear made?
A. We manufacture Nclear in the same way that minerals are made by Mother Nature (heat, pressure, and steam), but under much tighter controls. Nclear was engineered with exceptionally high electrical charge characteristics and an optimal crystal shape and size for maximum adsorption of phosphorus and to cause a strong rapid permanent bind to Nclear. Additionally, Nclear crystals are insoluble in water (unlike other medias), so they will not break down over time.

Q. It appears that Nclear is similar in application to Alum. What sets you apart from Alum?
A. Nclear shares no properties with Alum. Everything about Nclear is different. Nclear’s sorptive efficacy and sequestration capabilities far exceed any media on the market today, including Alum, and without the harmful side effects of Alum. Additionally, the cost of Nclear is less than Alum for lake applications, and Alum must be applied repeatedly to keep the phosphate levels down. Nclear only requires one treatment to permanently remove the existing phosphorus from the water body.

Q. What other characteristics make Nclear different from other media?
A. Nclear is an engineered mineral (media) designed specifically for the purpose of excess nutrient removal with exceptionally high adsorption efficiency and no potentially harmful environmental side effects. No other media is engineered for this specific purpose. Competitive media are either a byproduct of industrial waste or are mined. Those media naturally possess some limited sorption properties that can bind phosphorus at very low sorption rates. Additionally, those media will break down over time and phosphorus will be released back into the water column. Nclear is designed to permanently bind and sequester phosphorus.

Q. What about the phosphorus trapped in the lake sediment?
A. This is the best part of Nclear treatment, as Nclear crystals will continue to remove phosphorus from the sediment as the sediment is stirred up from equilibrium changes in the water column. As phosphorus is removed from the water column, loosely bound phosphorus in the sediment will be released due to a condition called “dynamic soluble equilibrium precipitation”. The phosphorus bound to sediment particles will become soluble as phosphorus concentrations decrease, and Nclear will attract and bind the phosphorus as it is released from the sediment.
